CALGARY - Jon Cornish has heard the Edmonton Eskimos want to limit his yards in Sundays CFL West Division final. Custom Seattle Seahawks Jerseys . It echoes what the Calgary Stampeders star has heard throughout the three seasons hes been the dominant running back in the league. When you play this sport at the level I do, every week theres going to be people gunning for me. Thats how it is, Cornish said. That is the reality of my life. People are going to be out gunning for me. Because Im a main piece of this offence, shutting me down is going to be of critical importance to teams that want to beat us. I learned that a long time ago, so I dont think anything different.Calgary (15-3) and Edmonton (12-6) meet at McMahon Stadium in the first all-Alberta division final since 2001.The winner advances to the Grey Cup in Vancouver on Nov. 30. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes (9-9) square off Sunday in the East Division final.Calgarys last trip to a Grey Cup was in 2012 and their last win came in 2008. Edmontons last appearance and victory in the CFLs championship game was in 2005.Edmontons defence ranks second in the CFL in defending the rush, but corralling the three-time CFL rushing leader and winner of the Most Outstanding Player award in 2013 is no easy task.Cornish appeared in just half of Calgarys regular-season games, yet won the leagues rushing title a third straight year with 1,082 yards. Cornish posted over 100 yards in six of his nine games, including two he played against Edmonton. The 30-year-old from New Westminster, B.C., ran for a combined 272 yards, two touchdowns and a dozen first downs in the Labour Day series versus the Esks on Sept. 1 and Sept. 6. Calgary won those games by scores of 28-13 and 41-34. We want to stop him because their offence does evolve around him most of the time, Eskimos defensive end Willie Jefferson said in Edmonton this week. We have to slow him down, make them try to find another way to win the game without him.”Cornish also won the CFLs Outstanding Canadian honour in 2012 and 2013 and is a finalist for it a third straight year. His performance so far in 2014 begs the question, what numbers could Cornish have reached in the regular season if hed been healthier? He didnt participate in a 26-22 victory over the Esks on July 21. He was knocked out in the season-opener against Montreal and sidelined the next six games. After sitting out another pair of games for more precautionary reasons later in the season, Cornish bounced his head off the McMahon Stadium turf Nov. 1. The halfback didnt play in Calgarys regular-season finale as he was put through concussion protocol. Cornish has been back to full practice this week.Eskimos head coach Chris Jones was Torontos defensive co-ordinator when the Argonauts defeated the Stampeders 35-22 in the 2012 Grey Cup. Cornish rushed for 57 yards in the game. The Stampeders went 14-4 last season only to lose 35-13 at home in the West final to eventual Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan. Calgary committed seven turnovers and Cornish mustered 60 yards in the game played in icy temperatures.Sundays forecast is for mostly sunny skies and a high of minus-2, but some snow is expected Saturday. The Calgary and Edmonton offences rank first and second respectively moving the football on the ground, so the run game will be key for both sides. If you look at the last few games that weve lost in the playoffs, we havent been able to set up a good run game, Cornish said.In the last Western final, turnovers just put us down. In the Grey Cup, we were outschemed. (Chris Jones) has a very smart defensive mindset, but its our job to establish our game. Theyre going to do their thing like theyve been saying. Were going to do our thing.Defensive end Charleston Hughes, winner of the CFLs defensive player award in 2013, has been testing his foot in practice this week. Hughes hasnt played since injuring it Sept. 13 during a game against Toronto. One of the obstacles right now is just mentally getting back into the game, Hughes said. Ive been out for two months.I think I can have a big impact in the game as soon as I step on the field. Its one of those things where my presence on the field changes the way a team has to deal with us. Rasheem Green Jersey . "Ive got a lot of work to do on this team and the sooner that I can get back to my office and start that work, itll be better," he said straight-faced as the rest of the room erupted in laughter. Seattle Seahawks Jerseys . “The fact that he was willing to do the deal the way we wanted it to be done showed that he wanted me to be a part of something great," Lowry said, noting that Ujiri willingness to sign off on the proposal that both Lowry and his agent presented to the GM was the final straw that convinced him to return. . You can watch coverage on TSN, TSN2 and CTV beginning today at 3pm et/Noon pt. The championships will feature approximately 250 of Canadas best figure skaters in senior, junior and novice as they vie for spots on the national team, international assignments and will act as the final step in the 2014 Olympic qualification process.MONTREAL - Jonathan Crompton went to see American Sniper at a local cinema this week and got spotted by a fan because of his shaggy long hair.I was going to buy some popcorn, because you cant watch a movie without popcorn, and this lady comes up with her husband and kids and says I wish you all the best this year and I recognized you because of your hair, the Montreal Alouettes quarterback said Wednesday. So my hairs the most recognizable thing. I cant hide it.Crompton hopes to be more than just a wild hairdo as he enters his second season with the Alouettes after a see-saw 2014 campaign. He was cut in training camp by the Edmonton Eskimos in May, but then signed in mid-season just in time to help Montreal turn around what had been a disastrous campaign. The 27-year-old was not the most elegant pivot, completing 58.1 per cent of his passes for a so-so 85.2 quarterback rating. But he took over as starter on a 1-7 team and helped them finish a respectable 9-9.He also led Montreal over British Columbia in the East semifinal before losing a week later to Hamilton. This year, Crompton will have the benefit of a full training camp and go into the season for the first time as the incumbent starter. Were still a long ways from training camp and weve got a lot of work to do, said Crompton, in town for a week-long visit. We need to get ready for mini-camp in April. The organization has to go through the draft and all that. But were excited. Were looking forward to the opportunity ahead. It cant come fast enough.Quarterback was a nightmare position last season as the Alouettes tried to find a replacement for retired CFL all-time passing leader Anthony Calvillo. They thought their guy would be Troy Smith, but the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner struggled to complete passes and rarely ran the ball. The team also didnt win with Tanner Marsh or Alex Brink behind centre.Crompton was fourth on the depth chart when he signed a three-year contract in July. His arrival came just after general manager Jim Popp brought in two coaches, former quarterbacks Jeff Garcia and Turk Schonert, to help inexperienced offensive co-ordinator Ryan Dinwiddie. They liked what they saw in Crompton, who had eight appearances in 2013 as backup to Mike Reilly in Edmonton. He saw his firrst action as an Alouette on Aug. Jaron Brown Jersey. 22 when he relieved Brink in the second quarter of a 24-16 loss to Winnipeg. The Asheville, N.C., native looked sharp as he passed for 266 yards. The next week, he got his first CFL start in a win over Ottawa to start the Alouettes on an unlikely climb back to respectability. Including playoffs, the club went 9-2 with Crompton as the starter. Now he wants to keep it going.Im not going to change the way I prepare now that Im the starter, he said. I prepared the same even when I wasnt the starter. My mindset hasnt changed a bit. Right now, Im just enjoying the off-season with my family, working out and staying focused. He should also benefit from greater stability in the organization. Last off-season, the Alouettes took until late in the winter to name Tom Higgins as head coach get the rest of the staff in place. It took nearly half the season for the staff to be settled.Higgins is back, with defensive co-ordinator Noel Thorpe as assistant head coach, while Kavis Reed will handle special teams. Schonert was promoted to offensive co-ordinator as well as quarterbacks coach, filling in for Garcia who left the quarterbacks position at the end of the season. Dinwiddie remains as an offensive assistant coach along with Calvillo, who will make his coaching debut. Its different not having someone you worked with every day, but this is a business, said Crompton. I havent had back to back (position) coaches since high school. Its always a changing environment, so we try to keep it as constant as possible within ourselves. We wish Jeff the best. He helped me out tremendously, mentally and physically. But now my focus is on this year.Another change is that the long hair will soon be gone. He has already promised it to the Locks For Love campaign, which supplies wigs to kids with cancer. But hair has become his signature feature, so he has vowed to grow it back.Im not going to go completely bald, its just not my look, I guess you can say, he said. I want to have a decent length of hair. My thought process is that I want to grow it as long as I can so when I cut it, I have a little hanging out of the helmet. That would be ideal because I feel thats whats most recognizable about me now, my hair.
